A Quiet Framework for Creativity
An art academy is more than a place for learning. It is an environment where children begin to encounter color, form, and material, gradually developing a visual sensibility of their own.
Yulari Art Academy was born from a fundamental question: Can a compact space leave a profound spatial impression that awakens the senses and fosters creative freedom Rather than adding decorative gestures, the design reduces visual noise and allows form, light, and material to exist within a quiet, continuous composition.
The waiting area is the first space encountered by children and parents, creating a moment of transition between the outside world and the learning environment.
Instead of sharp boundaries, soft curves and rounded forms guide the eye and movement gently through the space. Here, geometry is not treated as decoration, but as a spatial language that softens boundaries and creates a more relaxed sense of distance within a compact interior.
The overall composition remains deliberately restrained, allowing the space to become a quiet backdrop for the people and activities within it.
Within a restrained interior, subtle shifts in material become more perceptible.
Matte surfaces across the walls and ceiling soften harsh reflections, while understated flooring and tactile fabric upholstery form a calm and continuous material backdrop.
Against this neutrality, a custom solid-wood handle on the service table introduces a small but deliberate shift in weight and tactility.
The natural depth and physical presence of timber ground the fluid geometry, preventing the curved composition from feeling overly light. Experienced as much through touch as through sight, the detail brings the space back to a more intimate, human scale.
Lighting was conceived not as an object to be noticed, but as an invisible layer completing the architecture.
Circular trimless fixtures dissolve the boundary between light and ceiling, allowing illumination to emerge directly from the architectural surface. Their geometry quietly echoes the curves throughout the waiting area, creating a continuous rhythm without introducing additional visual elements.
The classroom follows a different principle. Here, expression gives way to function. A balanced arrangement of downlights provides an even visual environment in which children can comfortably observe color and form and remain focused on their work.
In the waiting area, light shapes atmosphere. In the classroom, light supports activity.
The role of illumination shifts according to the experience each space requires.
The interior is not intended to stand ahead of the children's work.
Soft geometry defines the boundaries. Light dissolves into those forms. Materials introduce moments of tactility and weight.
Rather than becoming the subject itself, the space becomes a quiet framework in which perception, concentration, and creativity can emerge naturally;
Design Narrative (KR)
미술을 배우는 공간은 단순한 학습의 장소를 넘어, 아이들이 색과 형태, 재료를 경험하며 자신의 감각을 만들어가는 환경이라고 생각했습니다.
Yulari Art Academy는 제한된 면적 안에서 감각을 발견하고 자유롭게 표현할 수 있는 공간적 인상을 남길 수 있는가에 대한 고민에서 시작했습니다.
장식적인 요소를 더하기보다 시각적 자극을 덜어내고, 형태와 빛, 재료가 하나의 차분한 흐름 안에서 읽히도록 공간을 구성했습니다.
공간이 먼저 말을 걸기보다 그 안에 머무는 사람과 활동을 조용히 받아들이는 배경이 되도록 했습니다.
대기 공간은 아이와 학부모가 가장 먼저 마주하는 장소이자, 외부에서 수업 공간으로 감각이 전환되는 지점입니다.
날카로운 경계 대신 부드러운 곡면과 둥근 형태를 반복하여 시선과 움직임이 자연스럽게 이어지도록 했습니다.
곡선은 하나의 장식적 제스처가 아니라, 제한된 공간의 경계를 부드럽게 만들고 편안한 거리감을 형성하는 공간적 언어로 사용했습니다.
절제된 공간에서는 작은 재료의 변화가 더욱 선명하게 느껴집니다.
벽과 천장은 빛의 강한 반사를 줄이는 무광의 표면으로 정리하고, 바닥과 패브릭 역시 시각적으로 앞서지 않는 질감과 톤을 선택했습니다.
서로 다른 재료가 개별적으로 드러나기보다 하나의 차분한 배경을 형성하도록 하는 것이 중요했습니다.
연속되는 곡면과 무채색의 배경이 자칫 가볍게 느껴지지 않도록, 손끝에 닿는 서비스테이블의 손잡이는 공간의 전환점이자 공간의 중심을 잡습니다.
작은 디테일이지만 자연 소재가 가진 깊이와 온도를 통해 공간을 보다 인간적인 스케일로 되돌리는 요소입니다.
조명 역시 하나의 오브제로 드러나기보다 공간을 완성하는 보이지 않는 요소로 작용하기를 바랐습니다.
대기 공간의 원형 트림리스 조명은 프레임과 천장의 경계를 최소화하여 빛이 건축 안에서 자연스럽게 나타나도록 했습니다.
원형의 빛은 공간에 반복되는 곡선의 언어를 이어가면서도, 별도의 장식 없이 천장과 공간 전체에 잔잔한 리듬을 만듭니다.
실제 수업 공간에서는 형태보다 기능을 우선했습니다. 균일한 다운라이트 배치를 통해 아이들이 색과 형태를 편안하게 관찰하고 작업에 집중할 수 있는 빛의 환경을 계획했습니다.
대기 공간에서는 빛으로 분위기를 만들고, 수업 공간에서는 빛이 활동을 방해하지 않도록 하는 것. 서로 다른 두 공간에서 조명의 역할은 다르게 정의했습니다.
형태는 부드럽게 경계를 만들고, 빛은 그 형태 안으로 스며들며, 재료는 작은 촉감과 무게를 남깁니다.
공간 자체가 주인공이 되기보다, 아이들의 감각과 창작이 자연스럽게 드러날 수 있는 조용한 배경을 만드는 것, 그것이 이 프로젝트에서 찾고자 한 가치입니다.
